Back-to-school is fading and it’s officially that late-summer stretch where everything feels a half-season off. Pretending fall is one blazer away, but it’s still polo-weather. That’s exactly when I look for a clearance that’s actually worked — and Banana Republic’s extra 20% off sale items is one right now.
Here’s my rule when a sale stacks a second markdown on top: I check whether the numbers actually improve what I’d pay, or just look louder. This time they do. The deal runs through Tuesday 8/25 on top of already-marked-down items, which is where I found a few I’d actually buy again.
What’s worth it

This is the one that stuck with me. 100% linen in a color that’s interesting without trying to be, and the key detail is the back: it’s butterfly lined for ventilation, not fully lined. That’s the one brands get wrong with linen — lining the whole thing defeats the point. It doesn’t here. It works over a tee or with jeans, so it’ll hold until fall actually sticks.
Cashmere Crewnecks — $79.99, was $160
I’m picky about cashmere because cheap cashmere feels like it should say that. BR’s track record here is consistent enough that $79.99 for a crewneck I’d otherwise watch for SALE tags on feels like a real find, not a hope.
Blake-Style Italian Suede Penny Loafers — $151.99, was $240
Made in Portugal, Italian suede, no weird fashion-code. These cross from summer into early fall without a single outfit change, which is what a $151 pair should do.
Italian Wool Ventile Jacket + Trouser — $279.99 + $147.99 = $427.98, was $680
The jacket works as a stand-alone sportcoat because of the textured wool and patch pockets, so you’re not locked into buying the full suit. The two colors on sale are a utility blue and a different-but-not-too-crazy green barbel. Sizes are moving fast on these, which is a good sign, not a bad one.
Woven D-Ring Belts — $31.99, was $60 (green is $23.97 final)
Summery, works with jeans on one of those weirdly warm fall days. The green version is the final-sale one, so it’s priced like it. I don’t usually buy belts on clearance, but $31.99 for a woven one that I’d replace in two years keeps me from saying no.
Waxed Canvas Tote — $43.99, was $75
One last beach trip, a long weekend in the mountains, or the grocery runs and farmers market fills in between. 14×25×9 inch with a zip top. It’s the kind of bag I’d wait for a midpoint sale on, which is exactly what this is.
Houndstooth Wool Suit Separates — jacket $179.99 (was $450), trouser $55.97 final (was $230)
Great prices, with one real catch: the trousers are tagged final sale, so no returns or exchanges on the pants. That’s straight-up annoying, but because it’s flagged, it’s fair. I’ve learned to accept that trade when the price is this far off list.
Oxford Cloth Button-Downs — $40, was $80
These aren’t in the sale section, which is the interesting part. They’re half off, which for BR’s full-price OCBDs — usually capped at 30–40% off when they get marked at all — is a real outlier. That washed-soft OTBD is worth the wait for a half price.
Do I get to it on a shipped bag?
Short version: the deal is real, the dates are tight, and the final-sale items are clearly flagged. I’ve bought BR on clearance a few times and the one thing that keeps it honest is the price math — the extra 20% lands on already-mocked numbers, so nothing here is a surprise at checkout. I’d grab the cashmere, the linen jacket, and the loafers first, because those are the three I’d re-buy on full price.

Worth it — if you can check the fit.
